Galaxy of Visions - February 2020

Abstract Augmented Reality by Erik Cheung

February 8, 2020 - March 2, 2020February 8, 2020 - March 2, 2020

The group show is featuring the works of artist Erik Cheung, who creates abstract paintings out of the strain of emotional thoughts. His process is to draw lines onto the canvas paper without lifting his graphite, until there is a pattern which reflects his emotional thoughts, he either embosses some parts of the image or colours some segments. Always reworking the lines in almost an existentialist way. Erik’s work will be on exhibit along side the amazing works by our resident artists.

Join us and show your support for local Edmonton artists, you can meet Erik Cheung at the artist talk on Feb 27, 2020 1-3pm and meet our curator Mariam Qureshi.

Others works will also be available by the following artists: Mariam Qureshi, Josh Harnack, Amber Paquette, Amaury Fortuna, Derryl-lynn Braumberger, Viktoria Marczisak and Denise Van Domselaar. The gallery will be open daily from 11-7pm. We hope to see you there !

More about Erik Cheung

Erik Cheung was juried into the North Park Gallery exhibition in 1988 just upon graduation. Soon after, he relocated and took up an art teaching profession for 20 years in Hong Kong. During which time started his long list of art exhibitions on the side. While teaching students, he was exposed to calligraphy and various disciplines of designs. These knowledge were later adapted and applied into his life size drawings and paintings.

It was 2010 when he moved back to Canada for good. It was a time of change and so his art followed.

In the past years, his abstracts focused on clarity and were done in balanced harmony. They belong to Minimalism to the extent of applying only red, gold, and black while celebrating the concept of space, contrast and balance. His lines, both continuous and broken, speak of unity over direction. But the transitions did not stop there, abstraction was eventually seen as a hindrance.

Realizing the need to seek for an alternate perspective, by swinging the pendulum back into representational works, he retreated into presenting an inner landscape. The new attempts have become dreamy, surreal, expressive, bittersweet, narrative, hypnotic, loose and flowing and pondering. Lines in flourishes tie the composition. The representation is barely ambiguous, balancing on the verge of recognition.

He now resides in Edmonton as a local artist. In 2017, he received the 150 in 150 award in the visual arts category and started showing his work at the Lotus Gallery. His artwork has been sold to private collectors in the U.S., Canada, England and Hong Kong over the years.

“A decade ago, I entered in my fb that politics sucks. Too bad it is a part of our lives. I came from Hong Kong therefore my perspective is obviously subjective and it can also be objective, as I am a Proud Canadian.” Erik Cheung. Video made by the artist.
